HOW TO MAKE YOUR JOB INTERVIEW A SUCCESSFUL ONE? Interview Tips

Through this article I would like to bring awareness on the interview tips. Most of the engineering students who are getting ready for campus placements are tensed whether they will get a JOB or not?

The main reason for this enigma is, students do not know what the selection procedure is.  In this article we will provide the viewers an insight into the following things.

  1. What is the general selection procedure in a campus placement?
  2. How should you prepare for the written test?
  3. What are the tips to get selected in a group discussion?

Firstly, we will discuss the general selection procedure in campus recruitment.

Selection Procedure:

Thanks to LPG – Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization happened in India from 1990. Because of LPG the whole world started looking at India, this in turn increased the competition among the eligible candidates to get a job.

Now – a – days, any corporate company which is hiring fresher’s through campus placements, is focusing on both technical skills and soft skills of a candidate. In fact, they are mostly focusing on the later part – Soft Skills. In a campus interview, 16% emphasis is laid on technical skills and the remaining on soft skills.

The general selection procedure adopted by the companies hiring freshers is…

  1. A written test :

This is the first round for almost every company conducting campus placement. In this test a student is tested on various subjects like

  1. Quantitative Aptitude
  2. Logical Reasoning
  3. General Knowledge
  4. Technical Skills
  5. English Proficiency

The main reason behind conducting a written test is to judge a candidate’s lateral thinking, ability to solve a problem,  reasoning ability and time management.

  1. A Group Discussion / Essay Writing / JAM:

This forms the second round of a campus drive. Most of the students are either eliminated or selected based on their performance in this round.

A typical group discussion / JAM a student is gauged on his communication skills, creative thinking, convincing skills, team skills, ability to handle sensible issues etc.,

In an essay writing, a candidate is tested on the in depth knowledge she/he possess on the given topic, ability to propose solutions and giving finite and amicable conclusions and of course not to mention that they will also be tested on their writing skills.

  1. Interview:

If the first 2 rounds of the selection procedure test you on your ability to work in a group, the last round JOB INTERVIEW will test your ability to handle pressure and the way you respond when you are alone. In short they will test your true character in the interview.

WRITTEN TEST:

This is the first hurdle in the selection procedure of any examination. Common Aptitude Test (CAT), CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test), GRE, GMAT, Probationary Officers, Campus Placements, National Defense Academy and many more, every competitive examination in the present scenario has a written test as their first round.

Written Test Pattern

This round tests a candidate on his ability to respond to a particular question with utmost accuracy. In addition to this she/he is also judged on the time taken to arrive at a amicable solution.

Then we might have a question as how these skills will be tested? The answer is a written test typically consists of question from quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, English proficiency etc.,

Quantitative Aptitude: This section generally consists of mathematical question of 10th class standard. Candidates are expected to perform calculation using various formulae and get an accurate answer. The main skill tested here is how to respond to the question, how quickly you make a choice of the formula and how quickly (in the least time possible) get the solution.

Logical Reasoning: Most of the competitive examination’s primary area of focus is LOGICAL REASONING. In this section a candidate has nothing to with formulae or calculations, all that one has to do is use his brain. Logical reasoning tests an individual’s ability to think in a 360o perspective. One should be able to justify his solution with a proper reasoning which is both logical and practical.

English proficiency: The first 2 rounds of the written test has nothing to do with an individual’s  communication skills, but in this round a candidate will be tested on his ability to communicate in the language which the globe speaks – English. A candidate is tested on grammar, sentence formation, checking for errors in the sentences, ability to understand a passage (Reading Comprehension) etc.,

First let us understand what a group discussion is?

Group Discussion is a discussion among a group of people about a particular topic within a specific time. Group Discussion is considered to be very effective selection round as the candidates are tested very precisely on a specific skill set which is required by a company.

Now let us go through a detailed understanding of types of group discussions, various kinds of group discussion topics, group discussion techniques which makes an individual to get through this round.

  1. Types of group discussions:

Generally there are 2 types of group discussions

  1. Structured Group Discussion
  2. Un-Structured Group Discussion

Structured group discussions have a specific formation of seating arrangement. There are 3 different seating arrangements in practice. They are

  • Semi – Circular Formation
  • Circular Formation
  • Closed formations such as Square, Rectangular etc.,

Out of these three, semi – circular and circular are most preferred and easy to participate.
