The Scarlet Ibis Full Story

The Scarlet Ibis is also called as Eudocimus Ruber which is an ibis bird from Threskiornithidae bird family. Scarlet Ibis bird lives in Tropical South America and the Caribbean islands. For Trinidad and Tobago, Ibis is one of the two national birds. scarlet ibis resembles other 27 extant species of Ibis family, But Scarlet Ibis bird color makes it unique. This is the medium size bird which is hardy, productive bird and around the world, it has protected status. Because, throughout the world, this Ibis is protected and in addition, IUCN officials have declared the Ibis as the least concern on the Red list of International Union for Conversation of Nature. This scarlet bird has been included on the national list of endangered species in Brazil.

For Trinidad and Tobago, Cocrico and Ibis bird are considered as the national birds. On the Trinidad and Tobago coat of arms, Cocrico and Scarlet birds are featured. The Cocrico species inhabited in Colombia, Tobago, Venezuela places. As per the records, from the past 15 years, Scarlet Ibis was not associated on Tobago but it is associated with Trinidad. Scarlet Ibis is a companionable and sociable species which is most brilliant in searching for food and the scarlet bird is also very protective. Ibis bird inhabits in a flock of more than 30. All the birds stay close in the same tree, Built their nests in close to other pairs also. During flights and feedings, scarlet ibis has companion more with other storks, egrets, herons, ducks etc.

Ibis Bird Diet / Feeding:

Red Ibis probes their food under the plants and soft mud with their long and skinny bills. As per the recent studies in Llanos, This bird diet contains insects but this bird takes majorly shrimp, scarabs and ground beetles. The American White Ibis have differed, it probes same as Scarlet but it consumes fish, crustaceans, and bugs. But, they consume many shrimps and also some other crabs, crustaceans. The red pigmentation of the scarlet bird is due to the intake of a large quantity of Red shrimps and Shellfish which contains astaxanthin and carotenoid. To maintain the scarlet color, the zoo committee will provide the vegetable diet for this bird which contains beetroot and carrot. The Scarlet bird is very aggressive when any other species stealing their food scarlet will attack and fight with them to protect their food.
